What Makes a Box Corrugated?
Corrugated board is a sandwich: two flat liners glued to a wavy layer called the flute. Those arches carry load the way a bridge does, which is why a light sheet of board can stand up to stacking and knocks. Change the flute and you change the thickness, the cushioning and how well the surface prints.
Which Flute Is Right for Your Box?
There is no single best flute, only the right one for the contents and the journey. The table below is how we think about it when we recommend a grade on a quote.
| Flute | Feel | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| E flute | Thin and smooth | Small boxes, mailers, crisp print |
| B flute | Firm, resists punctures | General parcels, everyday cartons |
| C flute | Thicker, more give | Larger boxes, softer contents |
| BC double wall | Two flutes bonded together | Heavy, fragile or stacked goods |
The guide to flute types goes into each one in more detail, including why the letters are not in size order.
Box Styles in Corrugated Board
Most corrugated boxes are regular slotted cartons, but the same board can be cut into other shapes. A half slotted container has no top flaps and is often used as a tray or with a separate lid. A full overlap carton doubles the board on the top and bottom. A tuck lid box closes without tape and opens like a mailer.
- Regular slotted carton for everyday shipping
- Half slotted container as a tray or with a lid
- Full overlap carton for heavy or long loads
- Box with lid for storage and repeated use
Are Corrugated Boxes Good for Printing?
Yes, with a little planning. Plain brown board takes dark inks well, and a 1 or 2 colour logo looks clean on every flute. Full colour artwork is sharpest on E flute or on board with a white outer liner, because the smoother surface holds fine detail. On thicker flutes, bold shapes and solid colours work better than thin lines.
How Do You Work Out the Right Size?
Start from the packed product and work outwards. Every corrugated box we quote is sized from the inside, so the figure you send is the space your product gets.
- Measure the packed item at its widest points.
- Add room for wrapping or void fill on each side.
- Write the size as length, width, then height.
- Tell us the weight and whether boxes will be stacked.
- We confirm the board and send the price.
Where Do Corrugated Boxes Get Used?
Everywhere goods move. Online shops post orders in them, wholesalers send them to retailers, workshops pack spare parts, offices archive files and families move house. The same basic carton, made to a different size and grade, handles all of those jobs.
What Changes the Price?
Board area and grade first, then print and quantity. A double wall box uses roughly twice the paper of a single wall box of the same size, so it costs more. Print adds set-up per colour. The quote always shows the exact price, starting from £0.20 a box for compact plain cartons.
Keeping a Range of Sizes Tidy
If you send many products, try to settle on a small set of sizes rather than a different box for everything. Fewer sizes mean simpler storage, faster packing and better prices, because each size is ordered in larger numbers.
Sizing Your Corrugated Boxes
Corrugated boxes can be made to almost any inside size, from small parts boxes a little over 100 mm long to long cartons for poles and panels. Sizes are written length × width × height in millimetres, inside the box.
Remember that thicker board makes the outside bigger. If the box must fit a shelf, cage or locker, send the outside limit too and we will work back from it.
Board for Corrugated Boxes
Corrugated boxes are available in every grade we make. Use the table to match the board to the job, or leave it on Not sure yet and we will recommend one.
| Board | Thickness (mm) | Strength | Best for | Print finish |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single wall E flute | about 1.5 | Light | Small mailers, postal boxes, retail packs | Very good, sharp print |
| Single wall B flute | about 3 | Medium | Shipping boxes, mailers for everyday parcels | Good |
| Single wall C flute | about 4 | Medium, more cushion | Larger parcels that need some give | Good |
| Double wall BC flute | about 7 | Strong | Heavy, fragile, stacked or palletised goods | Fair, best for 1 or 2 colour |

Corrugated Box FAQs
Sizes and Board
Is corrugated the same as cardboard?
In everyday speech, yes. Strictly, corrugated board has a fluted middle layer, while cardboard can also mean solid paperboard.
Which corrugated grade is most common?
Single wall B flute is the most common grade for everyday parcels.
Can corrugated boxes have hand holes?
Yes. Hand holes can be cut into the end panels, which is useful for heavier boxes and storage.
Can I get corrugated boxes with a white outer surface?
Yes. White lined board is available for brighter print. Ask for it on your quote.
How thick is corrugated board?
From about 1.5 mm for E flute to about 7 mm for BC double wall.
Are corrugated boxes suitable for storage?
Yes. Kept dry, a corrugated box with a lid makes a sturdy storage box for files and household items.
Delivery and Returns
Do corrugated boxes come glued?
Yes. The side seam is glued at the factory; you only fold and close the flaps.
Can corrugated boxes be stacked on a pallet?
Yes. Choose double wall for heavier stacked loads, and tell us the stack height so we can advise.
More Questions
Will brown corrugated board show white ink?
White can be printed on brown board, but solid dark colours usually give a cleaner result.
What is a half slotted container?
A slotted carton with bottom flaps but no top flaps, used as an open tray or with a separate lid.
