What Is a Folding Carton?

A folding carton is a box made from a single sheet of solid paperboard, cut and creased so it folds into shape. It is thinner than corrugated board, takes fine print beautifully and stores flat in very little space. Most products on a shop shelf come in one.

Which Closure Should You Choose?

The way the ends close affects how quickly cartons can be packed and how secure the base is.

ClosureHow it worksBest for
Straight tuck endBoth end flaps tuck in from the same sideClean front panel, premium look
Reverse tuck endFlaps tuck in from opposite sidesEconomical, very common
Crash lock baseBase locks as the carton opensHeavier items, fast packing
SleeveOpen-ended band around a tray or productBars, sets, simple packs

Kraft or White Paperboard?

White paperboard gives the brightest print and the truest colours, ideal for photographs and detailed designs. Brown kraft paperboard has an unbleached, workshop feel that pairs well with one or two inks and small-batch goods.

  • White: cosmetics, supplements, bright brands
  • Kraft: teas, candles, soaps, natural brands
  • Either: can be printed inside as well as out

When Should You Use Corrugated Instead?

Folding cartons protect a product on the shelf, not in a courier network. If a product is sent on its own by post, it needs a corrugated outer such as a printed mailer box. Many brands use both: a printed carton for the product and a plain shipping box around several cartons.

How Do You Size a Folding Carton?

Measure the product closely, because cartons are designed to fit snugly. For bottles and jars, measure the widest point including the cap or pump.

  1. Measure the product at its widest points.
  2. Add 1 to 2 mm each way for an easy slide-in fit.
  3. Write the size as length, width and depth of the front panel.
  4. Tell us the closure you prefer, or ask us to suggest one.

Printing Folding Cartons

Paperboard takes small text and fine detail far better than corrugated board, so ingredients, barcodes and product details print clearly. We check text size and barcode width on the proof. Inside print is available for messages or instructions.

What Do Folding Cartons Cost?

Cartons use little board, so the price is driven mainly by print and quantity. Full colour on white board is the most common choice. Larger runs bring the price per carton down sharply.

Folding Carton FAQs

Printing and Artwork

Can barcodes be printed on folding cartons?

Yes. We check barcode size and contrast on the proof.

Is printing inside a carton possible?

Yes. Inside print is available for messages or instructions.

Styles and Features

What is the difference between a folding carton and a box?

A folding carton is made from solid paperboard; most boxes are made from corrugated board with a fluted middle layer.

Can folding cartons have a window?

Yes. A die cut window shows the product. Ask for it on your quote.

How does a crash lock carton base work?

The base is glued at the factory and snaps flat as the carton is squared up, giving a firm floor without tape.

Can folding cartons have an insert?

Yes. A card insert can hold a bottle or jar firmly in place.

Are folding cartons good for cosmetics?

Yes. White paperboard with full colour print is widely used for cosmetics.

Which closure is cheapest?

A reverse tuck end is usually the most economical closure.

Delivery and Returns

Can folding cartons be posted on their own?

They are not designed for it. Put them in a corrugated outer box for posting.

How are folding cartons delivered?

Flat, in outer cartons, ready to fold.
