What Counts as Retail Packaging?
Retail packaging is the box a shopper sees and handles before they buy. It protects the product on the shelf and in the bag home, carries the brand and the product details, and often stays with the product afterwards. That is a different job from a shipping carton, and it calls for different board and print.
Which Retail Pack Fits Your Product?
| Product | Pack | Board |
|---|---|---|
| Cosmetics, oils, supplements | Tuck end box | White paperboard |
| Teas, candles, handmade goods | Folding carton | Kraft paperboard |
| Gift sets, hampers, corporate gifts | Gift box with insert | White or kraft board |
| Small items sold at the till | Counter display box | White lined E flute |
Why Paperboard Instead of Corrugated?
Paperboard is solid and smooth, so it takes fine text, barcodes and photographs. It folds into crisp edges and stores flat in very little space. It is not built to survive a courier network on its own, so retail packs that are posted go inside a corrugated outer.
- Sharp print for small text and barcodes
- Neat edges and tight folds
- Compact storage when flat
- Pairs with a plain outer for posting
Getting Print Right on Retail Packs
Shoppers judge quality from the pack, so print matters more here than anywhere else in our range. Send vector artwork if you can, give us brand colour references, and check the proof closely. We check text sizes and barcode widths before anything is printed. The Design Your Box preview is a quick way to share a first idea.
How Do Retail Packs Get to Shops?
- Cartons are delivered flat to you.
- You fold and fill them at your bench.
- Filled packs go into a plain shipping carton or a display box.
- Retailers unpack straight onto the shelf or counter.
What Do Retail Packs Cost?
Paperboard uses little material, so print and quantity drive the cost. Full colour is the norm for retail, and larger runs bring the price per pack down sharply. Every pack starts from £0.20 a box, with the exact figure on your quote.

Retail Packaging FAQs
Printing and Artwork
Can retail packs show ingredients and barcodes?
Yes. Paperboard prints small text and barcodes clearly, and we check them on the proof.
Can retail packs be printed inside?
Yes. Inside print is available on most retail styles.
Styles and Features
Can a retail box have a window?
Yes. Many folding styles can have a die cut window.
Do retail boxes need inserts?
Bottles, jars and sets usually benefit from a card insert to hold them in place.
What is the difference between a folding carton and a tuck end box?
A tuck end box is one kind of folding carton, closed with tuck flaps at each end.
Delivery and Returns
Is retail packaging strong enough to post?
Not on its own. Put retail packs inside a corrugated outer for posting.
Can display boxes be filled before delivery to shops?
Yes. You fill them and send them in an outer carton, or send them flat for the shop to make up.
More Questions
Can I get matching retail and shipping boxes?
Yes. Retail packs and their outer cartons can be quoted together.
How long do retail packs take to make?
Production is 4 to 6 working days after proof approval.
What is the best board for retail boxes?
White paperboard shows bright colours best, while kraft paperboard gives retail packs a natural brown finish.
